Route 59 (Izu Peninsula)

Izu is a place that we tend to come back to quite often and that's because there's just so much on offer here. Coastal roads - yes! Winding routes through bamboo forests - yes! Twisties and Hairpin bends - yes! Seafood - yes!

But the most famous pilgrimage for motorcyclists isn't just the Izu Skyline (which does indeed deserve all of its hype). No, there are other hidden gems and off the beaten path routes on this peninsula that are worth a detour!

Route 59 has no fancy name, has no cool ‘Skyline’ in the title, but don't let that discourage you. Iit is worth every extra mile on your bike. It is an off the beaten path experience that is tucked away, offering scenic views, easy riding, winding roads and one thing that we think everyone would appreciate: less crowds!

The Route

Stretching approximately 50 km, Route 59 connects the coastal city of Numazu with the foothills of Mount Fuji. While it may not be as famous as other Japanese skylines, Route 59 presents a perfect blend of coastal and mountainous scenery, making it a diverse and enriching experience for motorcyclists who enjoy both technical rides and leisurely scenic cruising.

We recommend you start in Ito, which is a nice little town with some brilliant onsen and izakayas (if you want to stop there the night before).

Our route through Route 59 starts off in Ito on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula, and then descends down onto the west coast, ending in Nishina. The ride showcases the beauty of the rural landscapes (expect some quaint villages in between) and alternates between stretches of deep forests, narrow mountain routes and open views of the Pacific Ocean.

Highlights & What to Expect

Variety is the spice of life, and Route 59 is the secret sauce that keeps everything exciting without setting your hair on fire!  Expect panoramic views from well-maintained roads that can be enjoyed any season of the year (but particularly in Spring with cherry blossoms that line the road).

  • Varied Terrain:
Expect a mix of coastal and mountain riding, making it ideal for those who love dynamic routes. The section from Ito to Nishina includes sharp bends, especially when navigating the mountain roads, as well as some wide-open coastal stretches.
  • Panoramic Views:
You will be treated to views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Izu Peninsula's lush greenery. On clear days, you can catch glimpses of Mount Fuji in the distance, adding to the scenic allure.
  • Smooth, Well-Maintained Roads:
As with most of Japan, the road conditions are excellent for motorcycling, with well-paved surfaces and clear markings. Traffic is light compared to more famous routes, allowing for a smoother, less congested experience.
  • Seasonal Beauty:
As mentioned above, in Spring the road is lined with cherry blossoms. In autumn it’s draped in brilliant burning foliage, offering a breathtaking backdrop at different times of the year. Just be a bit careful in the height of summer, as you could encounter some heavy rains that will make the ride a bit slippery. Be sure to gear up and slow it down a bit!

Key Points

So, why is Route 59 worth a mention?

Well, as mentioned, unlike the more tourist-heavy Izu Skyline, Route 59 remains a quieter, less-known route. This means fewer cars, less congestion, and more opportunities to fully enjoy the ride without distractions.

But not only that, it offers a good challenge for those who want a bit more technical riding, especially the mountain sections which offer tight bends that will challenge those riders who enjoy leaning into sharp turns. However, the great thing about this route is that it is also accessible enough for casual riders who want to take their time and soak in the scenery.

Despite its relatively low profile, Route 59 is near several key attractions, including:

  • The Nihondaira Plateau, offering panoramic views of Mount Fuji,
  • Suruga Bay - an iconic bay captured in many traditional Japanese art.
  • The Kawazu Seven Falls - a secluded area in the south of the peninsula that contains beautiful waterfalls along an easily-accessible trail.

And finally, Route 59 links up with other scenic routes like the Izu Skyline, making it a flexible part of a larger itinerary.

Food Stops

Now that we’ve sold you on the route, we know what will come next: “what's for lunch?”.

Well, given it's a relatively short ride (only about 2 hours), it's best to leave early from Ito (or in reverse from Nishina) and make it to the other side for lunch. Here are some key highlights for the start and end-point of this route:

  • Nishina Port: A small but charming fishing village near Nishina offers great seafood, with restaurants serving fresh catches from the Pacific. Try local specialties like Kaisendon (seafood rice bowls) or Grilled Mackerel.
  • Ito City: Before setting off, or arriving if you're doing it in reverse, Ito has various cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Japanese dishes or quick bites. Popular options include yakiniku (grilled meat), ramen shops, and several seafood-focused eateries that offer a taste of the local produce.
  • Dogashima Rest Areas: As you approach the Nishina area, rest stops along Route 59 offer scenic picnic spots and vending machines where you can take a quick break and refuel.

Verdict

Route 59 from Ito to Nishina is an underrated gem for motorcycling, perfect for those seeking a ride that balances thrill and scenery. Expect a diverse terrain that will keep you entertained, from coastal views to mountain twists, ensuring that every kilometer offers something new.

With less traffic and excellent road conditions, it’s an ideal escape for riders who want to explore Japan’s more hidden scenic roads.
